After a month of getting baked alive in heatwaves, I was genuinely looking forward to cool mountain breezes at Lake Kawaguchi. Instead, the weather gods decided to personally mock me. We got 15°C (felt like 13°C) and relentless, hypothermic rain at 800 meters of elevation. It was an instant, painful flashback to my first Ironman in Switzerland—which, coincidentally, was also 13°C in July in a cold lake.
We spent the entire day cold, soaked, and shivering. To top
off the experience, Mt. Fuji completely ghosted us—we didn’t catch a single
glimpse of the mountain all weekend. At least I got to suffer alongside my
longtime friend Mika-san, who casually nabbed 2nd place in her age group while
I was mostly trying not to freeze solid.
Pre-Race Prep: What Prep? My running over the last
five months was practically nonexistent after tearing my meniscus in April. My
training consisted almost entirely of bike, swim, and aggressive physical
therapy, with zero runs over 5km. The master plan for 2026 was just to survive
a few warm-ups to prepare for a big 2027—targeting Goto in June, Mt. Fuji in
September, and Kawazu in November. On the bright side, the drive from home was
a painless two-and-a-change hours.
Swim (1.5k) We were literally shivering while setting
up our bikes in transition. Out of sheer survival instinct, I zipped into my
wetsuit two full hours before the start. Standing on the lakefront, it dawned
on me that the water was actually warmer than the air—meaning the swim wasn't
the problem, but getting out would be pure agony.
It was a rough swim regardless. I couldn't find a rhythm in
the crowded mass start, my goggles fogged up immediately, my heart rate spiked,
and being hyperventilating-adjacent for two hours pre-race didn't help. I
survived in 33:49. I'm going to blame the 800m elevation cutting my oxygen
supply by 3% for this one.
Bike (40k) Without question, one of the nastiest
Olympic-distance bike legs I’ve ever done. Coming straight off weeks of 30°C+
heat, my body had no idea how to handle freezing rain and wind.
The first 10k were miserable. The hill climb actually helped
by forcing my body to generate enough heat to stay conscious, and I felt okay
until the 30k mark. Then the skies opened up into a torrential downpour. By the
final descent, I was shivering so violently I could barely squeeze Hillary’s brake
hoods. A time of 1:30:34 is my slowest Olympic bike split on record, but that’s
the tax for cycling through a typhoon-adjacent mountain storm.
Run (10k) A different flavor of suffering, but oddly
welcome because running actually generated enough body heat to thaw my frozen
extremities.
I was genuinely shocked that my knee held up for a full 10k
without stopping—my first run past 5k in nearly half a year. Naturally, my
ankle (an older injury) started complaining immediately, clearly offended by
being forced to work for over an hour. But I finished strong. 🙌

Post-Race Logistics & Debrief Huge thanks to Meg
for keeping the rest of my life from collapsing while I was out freezing for
sport. To round out a completely chaotic weekend, I also somehow managed to bring
Ty to the wrong school in Numazu the day before the race. A total masterpiece
of execution all around.
Next stop: Kawazu Triathlon in November. Let’s hope November in Izu is somehow warmer than "summer" at Mt. Fuji.
