Hokkaido Triathlon: Northern Exposure

Big Kudos to TnTs Ernesto, Ian, Leonardo, James, Gareth, Lesa, Jeff, Richard, Steffen, Jess who battled the hills and heat in the longest middle-distance race in Japan! Ernesto won his AG as usual, Ian grabbed 3rd overall, James had a solid race, Gareth and Lesa brought home the bacon together, and Motozo was happy to survive the grueling run without too much damage.

Swim:

The swim was the best part of the race for me in hindsight. Perfect water temperature around 24 degrees, clear fresh Lake Toyako with only 3 buoy turns over the 2k course. I did get caught in the middle of the mass start for the first 200 meters. The white waters and flailing arms and legs made me feel claustrophobic, so I eased up into breast stroke for 30 seconds, letting several flying fish go ahead. I found a nice groove after 500 meters and landed happily at the midpoint shore/start point (1,000 meters) in 18 minutes. I did the entire 2nd lap with a group of 4-5 swimmers, drafting all the way. I was #30 out of the water which proved to be my best discipline of the day with very little effort. If only the rest of the triathlon were this easy!

T1:

Ernesto joined me in T1, our bikes parked next to each other by coincidence. We took more time than usual to get ready for the 130k bike…socks, food/fuel stuffed in pockets, cup of coffee, donuts, and then shoved off…

Bike:

It was drizzling mildly which didn’t bother me much as I knew the heat later would make us suffer. Ernesto caught me on the first 5k and we climbed the first big hill together. He was gapping me on the flats with a TT bike, while I reeled him in on the first hill with my road bike. After the first climb he said sayonara and zoomed ahead. I wasn’t feeling great on the 1H of the bike but at least I wasn’t suffering yet... At 70k, my mood went from so-so to dark. At 100k everything hurt. My lower back numbness was the most uncomfortable.

I had to stand up to pedal at times, or straddle the seat on the downhills. A pain in the butt if you know what I mean. I usually don’t stop on the bike when nature calls during a race, but this distance was my longest in several years, and so I stopped twice for toilet breaks. It was a mild relief for the stomach cramps but I probably carbo loaded too much the night before. The last 30k around the lake was a tough lonely journey. I pulled into T2 a wounded soldier, dreading the long run ahead. Luckily, Ty the loyal son was there waiting patiently,

“Daddy, what took you so long??”

T2:

With Ty providing commentary on the fast guys in front, I prepared for 23k of hell. “Dad, you are about in 10th place, since there were about 10 old guys in front of you”. I was already feeling deflated, so did a wardrobe change into running shorts and singlet. Might as well be comfortable through the torture, I thought foolishly. I roughly estimated 2 hours plus alpha to Ty for our finish line rendezvous and headed back into battle…

Run:

Well, it was about as torturous as I had envisioned during the 2H of the bike, and the wardrobe change was actually a hindrance. I was dousing myself with ice water every rest stop, which felt nice but made my running outfit heavy. Those rest areas were heaven on earth though… When I ran this race in 2017, the run was a similar pattern of mental battle except at a much faster pace. I break it down as follows:

0-2k pain/shock in my legs

2-12k better pacing and actual belief that I can run strong.

12-17k a dark period, decline in spirit/pace.

18-23k rejuvenation, followed by hitting the final wall at 21k, forcing myself to keep going.

From 12k on I really wanted to stop running so I forced myself to play mental games/rules.

1.       No stopping between aid stations which were every 2k

2.       Make eye contact and smile at every runner that goes by. This helped me ignore my own suffering somehow.

3.       Don’t let anyone over 50 run by. (This of course didn’t work)

After hitting the final wall, my run was reduced to a shuffle. 8 hours into the race I spotted Ty waiting in the park 1k from the finish line. Again he inquired,

“Dad, what happened, why are you so slow??”

He was wearing slippers but had no problem running with me the last 1k. There was a runner stalking us 100 meters behind so my final motivational mind game was to stay ahead of him. Ty provided play-by-play again…

“You’ve got 500 meters to go, the guy behind us is 100 meters, 80 meters, 50 meters, wait he’s fading, you go this!”

Soon we could hear the cheesy finish line music, the announcement said something roughly translated as: “isn’t it wonderful that kids finish with their parents”, so we finished together to the “roar” of the crowd (4 TnT teammates and 2 announcers). Nice to finish with the kid this time.

Final gory details:

8:25:35 total time, 46th out of 183 starters, 15th out of 63 in AG (50-59)

Swim 39:23 30th place

Bike 5:02:39 38th place

Run 2:43:33 73rd place

Man, that was hard! I think the weather was tougher this year than previous years despite the clouds during the swim and bike. There were 29 DNFs this year versus 19 in 2017 despite less starters this year. It had to be close to 100% humidity, yet I had trouble getting fluids in during the bike.

Next stop: Sept. 3, the beautiful island of Sado, Astroman Triathlon, B-type middle distance, 2k swim, 108k bike, 21k run. This summer has been extra hot even in Hokkaido, that 21k in Sado rice fields without shade 2 weeks after Hokkaido Tri is a little scary….

Northern Exposure

Miyajima Woodman Triathlon, Final Fantasy

Woodman, the final showdown of my spring season, is in the books. It's my 4th triathlon in the past 5 weeks and also the last time they will run the event.

Pre-race

The journey to western Japan’s iconic Miyajima was a hard task in itself. Even with the express Shinkansen, a 7 am start barely got me to 3 pm registration cutoff. Luckily, they waited for the late stranglers and gave me my race bag. A photo opp in front of the famous giant orange shrine with TnT, pasta/pizza carbo loading session at and Italian joint, and we were ready for 6 hours sleep before the Sunday race.

Swim

This was the last Woodman and the first one since 2019. It seemed as if they were going at it half-baked by reducing the swim to 1.5k from 2.25k (originally 2.5k) despite no waves in the calm Seto Inland Sea. They were using an odd number system that categorized people by prefecture, botched the swim start time, etc. In any event, this was western Japan so we were ready for some local idiosyncrasies. Still the swim start wait was too long, 20 minutes after and already preannounced 10 minute delay. I wondered if we would be scorched by the midday sun after the 8:30 swim start…

It was a rolling start with 8 of us and the first 500 meters felt super smooth and fast. Too fast! At the first turn buoy circa 700 meters, I noticed my pace dropped off slightly. Soon after at the 2nd buoy we made a hard right and the current was more noticeable. It felt like I was swimming uphill. Everything was in slow motion. I started to get bored and tired but tried to stay focused on the final turn into the harbor. I exited the water in 32 minutes which was very slow given my 1H was 13 minutes, so a 19 minute 2H!

Bike

A major marketing point of woodman is the masochistic climb up the wooded mountain after the unique swim in front of iconic Torii gate, arguably the most famous shrine in Japan. Living in mountainous Shimoda, I wasn’t too worried about the hill climbs, just wondered how my running legs would hold up with my nagging ankle injury/lack of running training. On the other hand, the weather was a pleasant surprise. Cloudy, no rain, a manageable 25 degrees. And the shaded forest made for relatively cool hill climbs.

Another idiosyncratic feature was T1, an 800 meter hill climb in flip flops! I was more winded than usual and took way too much at the transition. Once I mounted Blue Thunder (my new Canyon road bike), though, everything was gonna be ok. There were a series of little hills to start, than a rather nasty 200 meter climb followed by a nice flat bit, and than one big hairy final climb…
I must’ve broke several personal climbing records on this bike course:
-Biggest elevation gain in a triathlon, 1,264 meters
-Longest hill segment in a Tri, 15k
-Slowest bike pace in a triathlon (any distance), 21 kph
-Steepest incline in a triathlon, 23 meters per 1k

-Steepest incline, 12 degrees?

You get the idea…

Anyway, that last climb was over 300 meters of straight climbing at 5-10% degree incline. Many riders were pulled over, exhausted. The crowd support was nice, reminding me of my European Ironmans with drunken spectators cheering you on as you climb the most difficult parts. There were guys pounding taiko drums, yelling “fight and gambare”, overall very positive energy levels I thought. That helped me get over that final climb. I zoomed into T2 at the top of the mountain, eager to dismount Blue Thunder but curious how my ankle and rest of body would hold up…

Run

Funnily I felt ok and glided along the slight downhill. This was ominous. Downhill now means uphills later when I’m more spent? I couldn’t remember the course map so I was flying blind. And my Garmin watch battery died so no idea on time or pacing. Only one way to find out!

At around 5k, the run climb began, and Stan came flying downhill. I tried to ask him how far to the top/turnaround point….

“Hey Stan! How far to the top?”
“Far!”
“Ok thanks great just what I figured!”

The 5-12k bit was the most of the 426 meters of climbing, pretty nasty stuff. At the final k of the climb I was reduced to a shuffle and again there were many wounded soldiers pulled over, stopped or walking. At the turnaround point it felt like a whole new world, glorious downhills and less than half to go! I doused water over my head, took in plenty of sports drink, water, and salt tablets. I was recharged and hit the downhills hard.
The next few k went quickly. At 16k, we submerged from the mountain forest into the valley and the blazing sun hit me. “Don’t mind, don’t mind, only 4k to go to glory”, I comforted myself. I kept asking supporters how many kilos to the finish and most people seemed to know to my surprise. Finally at 500 meters to go I could hear the bustle of the finish line. I picked it up with one final surge and did a primal scream as broke the tape.

You are a Woodman!

Total time 5:30:42, 14th place out of 57 in age group, 249th overall out of 600.

TnT was well represented with Stan, Ken, Olivier, Chris, Ruslan, and Motozo.

In a nutshell, Stan was the top gun finishing 32nd overall. Olivier was right behind Stan despite getting a flat tire and replacing it on the hilly bike course. Chris had a good race finishing after Olivier. Ken was in the top half of his AG, smiling the whole race and offering help to wounded soldiers along the bike and run course. Ruslan unfortunately DNF’d after a tough swim current and initial hill climb. And Motozo had a better day at the office, attacking the hill climbs aggressively on the road bike while saving precious energy for the hilly run course.

The next day we were all drained, but managed to wake up at 5 AM to ride the Shimanami Kaido to Shikoku, which was tremendous.

Highly recommended if you are in western Japan.
